Phonics

The phonics method of reading and spelling is taught to pupils in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and as an intervention strategy to specific children in KS2 (the Nessy intervention programme is used to support this work).

Class 1 and 2 children are taught in single year groups enabling staff to tailor teaching and learning to the needs of the group. The children work within the phase that is appropriate to their level of learning.  We have developed a systematic approach to phonics teaching in school. We follow the Letters and Sounds programme which we supplement with Jolly Phonics as we believe the actions help the children to become secure with the initial letters that they learn. We are confident that our children develop a skilful grasp of phonics and this is evident through our consistently high ‘phonics screen’ results when the children are formally assessed at the end of Year 1.
